Every day we are bombarded with media content on the TV news, radio, online and in print. Our brains are constantly having to process and filter messages about the world around us through images, videos and words at a faster rate than ever before. Unfortunately, the speed at which the media technologies are evolving is much faster than the time needed to understand how they work. This leads to challenges with decreasing mental health, addiction, extremism and a lack of social cohesion. In this course you will gain some basic tools to engage with media mindfully, so you can feel like an empowered media savvy citizen.

Course objectives

  • understand how media is made and how we are vulnerable to media messaging
  • develop a critical lens to analyze any media content we consume
  • understand and experience what mindfulness is and how it can improve our relationship to technology/media
  • have practical mental and digital tools to use on our mindful media journey
  • have more digital and media literacy skills

What excites you or turns you off about mathematics? What does it look like when you are doing mathematics? This course is an exploration of ourselves as humans doing mathematics using mathematical thinking skills like analysis and rigour but also intuition and creativity. We will reflect on all of these experiences while working through a set of curated activities and explorations. Topics might include:

  • the usefulness of mathematics (applied)
  • mathematics as play (pure)
  • where different mathematical ideas come from (historical)
  • how people do mathematics (cultural)

These experiences will help us to develop our own individual philosophy of mathematics so that by the end of the course we might have some evidence to support our answer to the question: is mathematics an art or a science?

Asia Matthews has taught interdisciplinary mathematics courses in a liberal arts and sciences setting for 8 years. Mindfulness is being fully present in the here and now, not distracted or overwhelmed by what is happening around us. It is the quality of remembering used in meditation to keep the mind focused. Meditation benefits both mind and body. Stress, anxiety, depression, pain, insomnia, PTSD and substance abuse are some of the conditions it can benefit. Meditation requires no particular philosophy although some philosophies can be helpful.

Develop better focus and concentration with less emotional turmoil, greater creativity and enhanced self-awareness. Learn about different forms of meditation and mindfulness with an emphasis on personal development. The class is centered on the meditation practices of Tranquility (Jhana) and Insight (Vipassana).

Wear warm, loose, comfortable clothing and bring a cushion if you want to sit on the floor. A textbook titled The Mystic Quest by Anonymous Monkey is available for free in PDF format. Other file formats such as Kindle, ePub and TXT are available at Free-Ebooks.net.

Thai cuisine has been influenced by many cultures and is known for its amazing balance of sweet, sour, bitter and salty flavours often finished with aromatic herbs. In this hands-on experience, Mam invites you to come to savour the scents, flavours, magic and identity of typical Thai cuisine!

Begin your spicy journey by learning how to prepare the king of Thai curry dishes, massaman curry, a fusion dish combining ingredients from Iran, India and Malaysia. The base of this dish is usually chicken or other meat, potatoes, onions and roasted peanuts. Its richness comes from the coconut milk used as a base, just as for many other Thai curries.

Then, make tod mun pha (Thai fish cake), a tasty Thai appetizer made using fresh fish, Thai basil, kaffir lime leaves and green beans. The fish cakes are formed into round patties before being deep fried and served with a Thai sweet chili dipping sauce.

For dessert, make one of Thailand's best traditional desserts, khao niao mamuang. This mango sticky rice is served in both the most upscale restaurants and street food stalls. This crowd-pleaser is a simple dish and a delicious way to round off any Thai meal.
