Milner Gardens and Woodland

Shoots with Roots Field Trips

Your class or community group can experience Shoots with Roots on a single-visit field trip.

Our options below are only the beginning - we are happy to discuss specialized programs and visits based on your group's interests.

Dirt and Decomposers (Gr. K-3) - Available in Fall and Winter

Good soil is the foundation of a beautiful garden - and of a healthy forest! Students will make Forest Perfume, learn about decomposers, become soil scientists, and perhaps even make (and jump in) a leaf mulch pile.

Life as a Plant (Gr. K-3) - Available in Spring and Summer

Starting with our local forest plants, and then exploring the garden, we will investigate the lives of plants. Depending on the season, we may learn about how seeds travel, search for signs of spring, or hunt for pollinators, before planting seeds to take home.

Birds Birds Birds (all ages) - Available year round

After a 'dress-up' lesson on bird anatomy, students will play games to build their bird observation skills, learn about bird feeding, and finally become citizen scientists on a bird walk through the garden.

Nature Play! (all ages) - Available year round

Your group will get to know our local Douglas-fir ecosystem through a series of sensory-based nature exploration activities that encourage observation, exploration, and reflection in nature. There will be opportunities for age and seasonally appropriate nature play such as balancing on logs, swinging on tree branches, or hide and seek games. Come prepared to be active outdoors!

All programs are $6 / student with a minimum charge of $125 /group

All programs are 2.5 hrs long (including a break).
